GEOGRAPHY of UTAH – Homework due January 28, 2010 on your memory stick. This assumes you get your memory stick back on Tuesday, January 26. .

HOMEWORK: A02- Chapter 2 of Atlas for Schools Project

Purpose of the homework assignment:

Apply concepts of geography, specifically

LOCATION: where something is

INTERACTION: between physical and human geography

To a specific PLACE… the county “your school” is located in.

Learn the extent and borders of some of Utah’s counties. Enhance your familiarity with the human geography of Utah.

Better understand Utah geography by examining an area closely, specifically, “your county.” Classify its boundaries to better understand interactions between county boundaries (human geography) and politics (human geography); survey technology (human geography); land ownership (human geography) economics (human geography); sociology and culture (human geography); institutions (human geography); economics (human geography); and history AND physical geography such as rivers, mountain ridges, and river drainages (also called watersheds).

Assessment: This assignment will be graded:

50% on your map files, mostly Map #3 below.

50% on cover page discussion… why the boundaries of your county are where they are… the interaction of human and physical geographies of Utah.

Instructions:

ADD THE FOLLOWING FILES TO YOUR ATLAS FOR SCHOOL PROJECT.

LINK to Guide for Contents of your atlas… updated for this assignment. You can add more files, but, at minimum four files (one cover page and three .jpg files of maps).

A02a-CoverPage-County

Cover page for Chapter 2: _____ County – boundaries and connections.

(at minimum, add information to the structure that’s posted. Okay to add more.)

Files: three maps… two are downloads, one you’ll create hardcopy and scan.

(at minimum… and Okay to add files for a county scale that explain the boundaries of the county and interconnections of the county. Connections can be within the county; or beyond county boundaries. Save files as jpg or pdf

Download these two maps to your Chapter 2 -- _______ County directory

Map #1. A02a-UtahCounties

County map of Utah - LINK

If you have a map you prefer... it's fine to use it. For example you could use a map from your county's web site. Don't give it as a web link, make it a .jpg.

Map #2, A02b-UtahHighways-UDoT

Simplified highway map of Utah -- this is a pdf

Map #3. A02c-CountyBoundariesHumanPhysGeog

Then create one map hard copy that shows the interaction of human and physical geographies of Utah . Draw your county’s boundaries, as classified segments, hard copy on the DEM given out in class. (LINK to DEM.) When you’re done, scan your map (scanners are available in UofU computer labs), save the file in .jpg or pdf format.

How do you decide what boundaries are physical versus human?

First draw the boundaries, classified, on your highway map. We’ll start this in class. It’s okay to work together. Then transfer the information to the DEM given in class. This should be your work. Scan the map, and save it to your computer.

Here’s the classification scheme.

BROWN: Physical: approximately the ridgeline of a mountain range; the boundary of a watershed.

BLUE: Physical: a river

ORANGE: simple geographic reference (lines of latitude or longitude)

YELLOW: checkerboard – township and range, land ownership or survey

PURPLE: arbitrary
