Link to Guide to File Structure

Link to example for UofU.... Some draft files as of Jan28 TranspUT TranspSLCo

Purpose of the homework assignment:

Apply concepts of geography to Utah and to Utah places. Specifically use Utah’s transportation corridors to better understand:

LOCATION: where something is

PLACES: locations that matter

INTERACTION: between physical and human geography, and

MIGRATION: movement

Your extra special place is your-atlas school and the county it’s in (location).

Assessment: This assignment will be graded:

25% on your map files.

75% on cover page discussion…

(a) Observations of geographic patterns specific to your county’s transportation infrastructure;

(b) Analysis and discussion of those patterns

Instructions:

ADD THE FOLLOWING FILES TO YOUR ATLAS FOR SCHOOL PROJECT.

LINK to Guide for Contents of your atlas… updated for this assignment. You can add more files, but, at minimum four files (one cover page and three .jpg files of maps).

A03a-CoverPage-Transp-County

Cover page for Chapter 3: _____ Transportation corridors and ______

Observations of geographic patterns of transportation in your school’s county.

Analysis of those observations using geographic concepts.

Be clear on what transportation systems you’re analyzing… just modern transportation or some historic ones as well. That’s your choice. For example if the Spanish Trail goes through your county, you could discuss why it is where it is and why today’s roads and rail systems do or do not follow the same route.

Write a minimum of 3 observations and a maximum of 8.

Think about what we’ve covered in class and what you’re expected to have learned.

Analyze geographic patterns deliberately.

Communicate your analysis.

Coaching: great geographers not only see what’s there… but what’s missing.

Keep asking yourself “why” …  The 5 why’s of Toyota

You may want to review the class session notes for the geographic theme of MIGRATION.

How much does connectedness matter to your county?

Map files:

Map#1

A03b-MapGoogleEarthTransp-Utah.jpg

Purpose: Google Earth is a powerful tool I want you to master. Add your school and your county to the map, and transportation routes.

Tips in Google Earth on: How to display transportation corridors

In the menu LAYERS

Activate Places of Interest.

Clear all of the Places if the all are active.

Then activate Transportation… quite low on the list.

Then within Transportation, observe the key and activate components.

Map #2

A03c-GoogleEarthTransp-County.jpg

At minimum, show county boundaries, your school, label the county

Show transportation

Map #3

A03d-TransportationMapOfYourChoice.jpg

For Utah or for your County. A jpg of your choice.

Use this as an opportunity to illustrate a concept of your observations or analysis written up in your cover sheet for this chapter.

Additional maps as you desire.

A03e… etc etc

FILE STRUCTURE: Please put all of Assignment 03 in a separate folder of your Atlas Directory… otherwise I may not recognize what’s new and what’s old. I like the structure of the Guide to Contents page, but it’s Okay to have a different structure so long as each assignment is in its own folder and so long as I see the logic.
