Session 17 – Earth’s geosphere and urban settings

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Change in course strategy

Atlas Phase 1 ---

study it for the midterm

turn it in (with whatever revisions) by April 7.

Remember… one “ooops” pass – best 10 of 11 sessions … and the profile is one of them… so I (a) won’t forget; and (b) won’t hold it against anyone.

Atlas Phase 2 --- urban hydrologic settings – I get to present the settings, not you folks. (Lucky me… and, actually, lucky you).

GO TO… always… SCHEDULE

I think it now is revised and all numbers add up… but if you see a glitch, let me know.

Midterm Expectations

Everything relates to everything… 5 subsystems of Earth systems; 5 Big Science Concepts.

Relate 5 big science concepts to 5 subsystems of Earth systems.

Relate 5 subsystems of Earth systems to 5 big science concepts.

TODAY – I’ll go over the GREEN SHEET of Monday 3/8. I did the sheet as “feedback” and it also is as example of “everything relates to everything” (Earth systems… systems have subsystems that interact).

Another way to approach Earth systems… everything relates to everything…

Look at the subheadings of your chapters of Encounter Geosystems. Don’t just think about the subsystem (“sphere” in question), think how each of the topics of the Encounter Geosystems chapter is affected by each of the subsystems of Earth systems. As you gain confidence, this may even become fun…

For example… we could  TRY WEATHERING…

On Monday we may do any of the Big Science Concepts:

What are they? MIDTERM EXPECTATIONS (Monday is review day)

GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES

One of my favorite figures of all time… All energy flows of all of Earth on one page.
