April 26 -- Another Urban Environmental Setting

So close to the end of the semester...

REMINDER -- what are the purposes of the course? (a) to empower by knowledge... GEN ED integration of physical and biological sciences... The first part of the course you explored the science (workbook and those five Big Science Concpepts). The second part of the course you've integrated the science... how... because Earth systems integrate processes (systems have subsystems that are inter-related) and if you understand the hydrologic setting of a city you have integrated the regional characteristics of the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and anthrosphere.

REVIEW... How does drawing the hydrologic setting show and understanding of... the geo, hydro, atmo, bio, anthrosphere??

EXAM... coming up ... next Wednesday. Open book, open computer... but no interpersonal communications.

STUDY...

I haven't written it yet but one student takes the course on Friday, I am out of town until Tuesday afternoon, so... come see me this week, before Friday! Email me and set up a time. Standard office hours are Thursday afternoons, but I can meet with you other times by appointment.

I expect the exam will have three sections:

1) Rephrase MAJOR CONCEPTS - The five big science concepts, the five subsystems of Earth systems.

2) Compare two urban environmental geographic settings - (a) one will be a place we stopped on our field trip; (b) one will be from Water Suppy Paper 2242 -- I'll tell you the community and give you the section number.

3) Show you can take an Earth systems approach to something going on in the world... I'll give you choices. For example: the earthquake in Haiti: how do to the 5 subsystems of Earth systems affect what happened and the response to what happened.

HOMEWORK -- okay to turn in up to the 5/5 exam... but not thereafter. On-time homework has been given more credit than very late homewor, but you still can turn it in. Note: at this late stage, many of you have corrected homework back. Obviously I expect your homework to be your work I'll let you know when your status is posted on Blackboard Vista - Web CT. Also... keep your assignments, etc in your binder because, at the end of the semester, I'll check that I didn't accidently miss grading or recording the grade of an assignment. How will you get your materials back... I'll mail your graded exam and your binder contents to you -- not the binder.

MAP from USGS water supply paper 2242 -of where these settings are... What's special?.. thin sediment cover over tight bedrock. (Compare with Salt Lake: Alta; Tampa; Nevada; Minneapolis; New York; Chicago... COMPARE SEDIMENT THICKNESS; COMPARE TRANSMISSIVITY (porosity and permeability) of BEDROCK.

Approach... for you, forever, as an urban environmental geographer... if you can do this... you have a solid A for this course... there are other ways to have a less-solid A... but this is the proof of whether you can integrate physical and biological sciences and understand urban environmental geography.

FIRST GATHER DATA and UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM. THEN fill out the assignment.

So... FIRST -- (a) Google Earth.. fly to PARK CITY, UT. Explore and think. Perhaps view as USGS topo map. (b) Then... In the profiler ... generate a profile... perhaps two profiles. (c) THEN review the figures and the text of USGS water supply paper 2242... Then ... breathe deeply and think. Feel close-to-empowered.

THEN... Fill out the handout.

We'll draw the system on the white boards...
