REGISTRATION OPTIONS FOR EARTH SCIENCE EDUCATION’S TEACHER IN-SERVICES SUMMER 2010

There are three options!! (at the very bottom of this page are instructions for Jordan District)

(a) If you want to take one or two or even all four inservice courses for CACTUS

Register via PLAN (see below for instructions)

(b) If you want to take one or more in-services for university credit as 1-credit hour courses via SUU

Register via PLAN (see below for instructions)

(c) If you want master's level credit via Weber State University follow these steps HOWEVER

You have to commit to take all three of the first three courses (Changing Surface of Salt Lake County; Rocks and Minerals of Salt Lake County; and Geologic History of Salt Lake County)… and you have to commit to take them in order all in one year!! What makes this option special? Some of you are working toward endorsements. This course, at a masters level is designed to count toward an Earth Science Endorsement and might also count toward the physical science endorsement as well as the integrated science endorsement. We can’t say so with certainty, but that is the objective. To register for the WSU option:

  • Now… meaning before the first class, so by July 1, 2010, register for the three courses (changing surface, rocks and minerals, and geologic history) via PLAN and email Shirley Aryton at smayrton@graniteschools.org to specify that you want the Weber State University option.
  • Then when you successfully complete the three course sequence, you’ll be able to receive 3 semester hours graduate level credit (MED 6691: Geology for Secondary Teachers or MED 6630: Earth Science for Elementary Teachers) for a $40 recording fee.
  • Read info on this page and then... TO REGISTER, follow instructions of LINK

Coaching… 2009 was the first year for the WSU option and the process was rocky... please don’t get frustrated!

Questions you may have…

  1. Can you sign up for SUU and then change to WSU credit? – No… because it’s double entry meaning you’re getting double credits.
  2. Can you get credit for taking these courses years ago and count them for WSU credit? – no… because that would be double entry
  3. Can you commit for WSU credit, start taking the courses, change your mind and then get SUU credit? No… but we think you can get CACTUS credit. The problem is that you’re asking for retroactive credit and that is not Okay for a university course. Don’t sign up for WSU unless you’re very sure you can block out the time.
  4. Why do you have to take them in order for WSU credit and take them all in one year? Because the three in-services all together and in sequence make a strong semester of Earth science and breaking the sequence loses some of the educational value. LINK to SYLLABUS on file at WSU.
  5. Does the Great Salt Lake - climate change course count toward the series for WSU? No… it’s a grand course, but it isn’t part of the series.
  6. Do you have to take more than one in-service? No. You can get CACTUS or SUU credit for a single course. BUT, for the WSU course, you have to take the first three (changing surface, rocks and minerals, and geologic history) as a series, all in one summer.
  7. Will these be offered again? Yes. We’ll see whether it works to offer WSU master’s level credit. If it works, we’ll offer the series again for master’s credit in 2011.
