April 28, 2010 - Wednesday. Final class session of the course Some logistics ... then review ... Logistics... homework is returned. Okay to keep turning it in. The general policy is: when most homework assignments have been turned back, partial credit for the ones that come in later. If you're way behind on homework, it's still okay to turn them in, and if you want full credit for what you turn in after tody, meet with me. Why? A couple years ago I was coached that I encouraged cheating (people sharing answers and the unfairness of it) by allowing late homework submittals. But... I want you to learn the material and homework is the best way. So... (a) turn in remaining homework AND your binders when you take the exam (keep ungraded homework in separate pile); (b) if your remianing homework are just a couple, or are mostly the sections describing your community... no need to meet with me; (c) if you're turning in more than four assignments... then find a time to meet with me after the exam. When you turn in a batch of late homework, you meet with me and then I can pretty much tell if you did the work. Hope that makes sense and does not overly inconvenience you. No homework accepted after the exam. DON'T turn papers etc under the door of my office... may literally be swept up. If I am not in my office (OSH172) give whatever materials to the fine folks at the Dept of Geography OSH270. Exam... How to study. Get a good night's sleep. Review (on Marriott reserve and linked to course, USGS water supply pater 2242). Come earth to download what programs you want open as the exam starts. Breathe deeply. It's about what you know not what you don't know. The exam covers the entire semester with emphasis on INTEGRATING physical and biological sciences. Review the five subsystems of Earth systems Review the Big Five Science Concepts. Think about them. Think WHY characteristics of the Earth systems setting matters to cities. You'll show me what you know as you compare hydrologic settings of: one place we went on our field trip; one place from USGS water supply paper 2242. Open book, open computer but no interpersonal communications. Remember: the goal of the course is EMPOWERMENT by knowledge. You should be able to go anywhere and, with the help of web-based information, be able to figure out its physical setting. Congratulations... most of you are there, or so close that I think you'll be there next Wednesday... and for life! REMINDER: What is geography? GEOGRAPHY IS: Post-course self assessment. OFFICE HOURS... this afternoon after class; Tomorrow, Thursday... open times until 5:30PM (a student already has 5:30PM) REVIEW urban environmental geographic settings: SLCounty, Alta, Tampa, Moab, Nevada, Park City.
